During a Bird Wellness Exam

Your avian companion’s wellness visit includes a comprehensive beak to tail feather physical assessment and discussion about their lifestyle. Our goal is to keep your bird feeling their best and prevent future health issues.

A typical exam may include:

  • Nutritional counseling (many health problems stem from poor diets).
  • Regular weight checks and fecal exams.
  • Environment or husbandry reviews. 
  • Nail, beak, or wing analysis.
  • Testing for infectious diseases (depending on species).

Our team can also discuss biosecurity and hygiene practices to help protect both your flock and your household.

Environment matters

Setting Birds Up for Success

Knowing the correct environment setup for your feathery friend plays an important role in their safety and overall health. A bird can become stressed, injured, or ill when housed in an improper enclosure or cage setup that does not work for their specific species. In addition, insufficient lighting or heat, incorrect substrate materials, limited enrichment or perching opportunities, and infrequent sanitation can all negatively impact your bird.

During your bird’s exam, our team will review how their environment can affect their respiratory health, immune system, and behavior.

Beak, Wing, & Claw Care

A healthy beak, wings, and claws are essential for a bird to thrive!

A bird’s beak can become overgrown, fractured, or even grow abnormally due to improper nutrition or an underlying medical issue, such as liver disease. Without a healthy beak, a bird could struggle to eat, groom, or climb—leading to additional health issues that will then also have to be addressed. For wings and feathers, a bird relies on these for mobility, balance, communication, and temperature regulation. When you notice feather damage or unusual molting, your bird may also be hinting to stress, nutritional issues, or other diseases. Nail and claw length also need to be managed for your bird to properly perch and move around. Overgrowth can cause nails to get caught on cages or cause discomfort or joint strain. 

Regular veterinary exams for your bird can allow early detection of beak abnormalities, molting patterns, and prevent nail issues before they cause discomfort or interfere with their overall health.

Types of Birds We Treat

Birds vary in size, behavior, and care requirements. Our veterinary team is experienced in treating the following avian species and providing care based on species-specific health and husbandry needs.

Chickens

Veterinary care for chickens is primarily focused on preventative and overall flock health. They commonly run into issues with respiratory disease, egg binding, bumblefoot (an infection on the foot pad), and other parasitic issues.

Our veterinary team can discuss with you the importance of proper nutrition, coop housing and environment, sanitation, and egg production for your chickens. Treatment options can be limited due to food production regulations, so early detection and prevention is important.

Ducks

These feathered friends require access to water—inadequate conditions can lead to eye, skin, and feather issues! Ducks can also be prone to foot and leg issues, such as bumblefoot (an infection on the foot pad). 

Our veterinary team can discuss with you the importance of proper nutrition, water access and habitat setup, sanitation, and egg production for your ducks. Treatment options can be limited due to food production regulations, so early detection and prevention is important.
